Designer Series - Oli Booth Architecture

We had the pleasure of catching up with Oli Booth Architecture and taking a peek at the unique and beautiful family home he designed in collaboration with his partner, Libby Elmore.

Designer Series is about catching up with designers, architects, and industry leaders to gain insight into their approach to creating the perfect spaces in your home.

Oli Booth's unique home, also known as 'Lightly Weighted', is perched in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn.

Oli and Libby have managed to maximise the 280-square-metre section and create a stunning 2-bedroom home that is modest, private and takes advantage of the beautiful views.

"This project is special to us because it gave us an opportunity to explore how density could be done well in our cities through an understanding of scale and being willing to sort of tighten up the spaces that we create. We can, therefore, create higher qualities through the use of materiality, openness, texture and light".
Oli explains that natural materials were important when designing their home, so the use of timber panels throughout and wool carpet floor coverings made sense.

Samurai in the colour Pyua was selected for the wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms downstairs.

Oli and Libby chose the Untouched rug in the colour Restful with an overlocked edge for their living area. The rug brings light, softness, and textural detail to the space. Placed on the dark flooring, it provides a nice contrast and makes the room appear larger.

"Given this is quite a small space, we felt that a rug offered that opportunity just to have some softness and calm in the living areas, so we have large sort of flat surfaces being dark and recessive so that rug gives it a bit of lift and softness in the space".
